Located in Fraser, Colorado,
less than one block from the Winter Park/Fraser train
station, with great views of the railroad. |
| The Denver Northwestern and
Pacific Railway, The Denver and Salt Lake Railroad Company, and
later, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad all have used
the Moffat Road from Denver to Salt Lake. Earlier, the rail went
high over the Continental Divide at Rollins Pass. Later, a short
cut through the Divide was constructed at great cost. Today,
you can drive to the old Corona site, at the top of Rollins Pass
on the old Moffat Road, or take the Amtrak California Zephyr
through the Moffat Tunnel (6.1 miles long). |
| When you arrive at the Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast,
either by train, car, or bicycle, you can sit back and relax
while enjoying the view of the Rocky Mountains above the Moffat
Line. Today, Union Pacific controls the railroad, and you can
see a variety of railroad equipment from day to day. The Amtrak
California Zephyr stops at the Fraser/Winter Park resort train
station twice daily. Westbound # 5 from Chicago, IL and Denver,
CO arrives a little after 10 AM and eastbound # 6 from San Francisco,
CA and Salt Lake City, UT arrives after 4 PM. |
| Over the past ten years we
have collected some fine photos of various trains passing by.

| In a typical day you might
see up to thirty trains. Coal trains make up the most traffic,
carrying coal from the mines at Craig, CO. When they pass through
Fraser, they are running wide open, because this is the steepest
incline west from Grand Junction, CO to the Moffat Tunnel. You
can sometimes see fire coming out of the engine exhaust. A view
of the Moffat Tunnel is easily accessed (5 miles from the Whistle
Stop Bed and Breakfast) at the Winter Park Ski Resort. All-weather
highways bring you to the Fraser Valley. |
